Nigeria: Gunmen abduct more than 100 in northeastern Zamfara state

More than 100 people, including women and children, were abducted when gunmen raided four villages in Nigeria’s northwestern Zamfara state on Sunday, the Information Commissioner and residents said on Monday.

Kidnappings have become an epidemic in northwestern Nigeria as roving gangs of armed men abduct people from villages, highways and farms and demand ransom money from their relatives.

Zamfara Information Commissioner Ibrahim Dusara and a local resident said more than 40 people were abducted from Kanwa village in Zarmi Local Government Area of ​​Zamfara.

The resident, who declined to be named for security reasons, added that 37, mostly women and children, were taken to Kwabri community in the same local government area.

“Currently Kanwa village is deserted, bandits divided themselves into two groups and attacked the community. They kidnapped children and women aged 14 to 16,” said a resident of Kanwa village.

Residents said at least 38 people were abducted while working in their fields in Yankaba and Gedan Goga communities in Maradun Local Government Area.

Information Commissioner Dusara accused the gunmen of using the kidnappers as human shields against army airstrikes.
