Fifteen of Spain’s top female footballers have resigned from the national team, saying their head coach’s training methods are damaging their emotional state and health.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation said in a statement Statement On Thursday, he said he had received 15 emails from 15 players asking not to be selected, citing players who had issues with national team coach George Vilda and staff.

The federation said it was “an unprecedented situation in the history of football, both men and women, in Spain and worldwide.”

The players said in their resignation letters that the “current situation” had significantly affected their “emotional state and health”, according to the federation.

Spain head coach Jorge Valda before the UEFA Women's Euro England 2022 quarter-final match between England and Spain on July 20, 2022.

Reuters, citing sources close to the situation, said the players were unhappy with the management of injuries, the atmosphere in the locker room, Vilda’s team selection and his training sessions.

Both the federation and the Spanish Football Association appear to be standing by the coach.

The federation said it “will not allow players to question the continuity of the national coach and his coaching staff, as it is not within their powers to make those decisions.”

“The federation will not accept any pressure from any player while adopting sporting measures. Such tactics are far from the ideals and values of football and the game and are harmful.

The Spanish Football Association added that the players would not be allowed to return to the national team until they “admit their mistake and apologise”.

Rebellion is a high risk move for players. Refusal to honor a call-up to the national team is classified as a “very serious violation” and can carry disqualification sanctions of between two and five years, the federation said.
