This sense of connection can make these humanoid robots extremely useful in some contexts. Goertzel and his team are testing Grace to help seniors in the early stages of mental illnesses like dementia.
Through these pilots, Goertzel says, he has seen “a profound and uplifting effect on some very lonely people.” Dementia can cause problems with short-term memory, and they believe robots may be well-suited to responding to victims’ repeated requests.
“If you’re dealing with someone who’s in the middle stages of dementia, they’re asking the same thing over and over again,” Goertzel says. “It’s the same thing day after day. The robot will never get bored of it.

Sophia’s other sister, Desdemona, demonstrates a very different application for this type of technology. She is a member of Goertzel’s experimental band Jam Galaxy. Goertzel plays the keyboard, while the robot improvises spoken word rhymes in response to music and cultural references that Goertzel feeds into its programming.
Robots can also be used in education and the service industry, Goertzel said.
Earlier this year, Dubai’s Museum of the Future introduced Amica, an artificially intelligent robot guide, to its “Total Today” exhibition.
The robot, built by British robotics company Engineered Arts, can answer simple questions from visitors about the museum. His facial expressions and body reactions are almost unmistakably realistic.
“This kind of technology has advanced in ways that no one could have imagined,” says Majid al-Mansoori, the museum’s deputy executive director.
