Tibet Airlines plane catches fire during takeoff in southwestern China

A fire broke out in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing on Thursday morning after a Tibet Airlines plane skidded off the runway.

The airline said in a statement that all 113 passengers and nine crew members had been “safely evacuated”. More than 40 passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to a statement from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport.

China’s Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) said 36 people were injured and sprained during the evacuation.

“According to flight crew, the plane suffered a malfunction during takeoff. They stopped takeoff after the procedure,” CAAC said. “After the plane skidded off the runway, the engine crashed to the ground and caught fire. (The fire) has been extinguished.”

A video circulating on Chinese social media shows the passengers fleeing the plane.

The flight was bound for Ningchi in Tibet. Footage posted on Chinese social media shows flames in the front of the plane and clouds of black smoke rising in the sky. Another video shows passengers fleeing the plane.

The airport said the cause of the crash was being investigated and flight operations at the airport had returned to normal.

The flight schedule shows that the aircraft is an Airbus A319 that has been in service with the airline for nine and a half years.
