Raheem Sterling says he didn’t think twice about joining Chelsea despite racist incident in 2018

Chelsea banned a fan from their stadium for life after an incident during an English Premier League match in December 2018.

The club said the man had used “racially abusive and threatening and aggressive behavior” towards Sterling while he was playing for Manchester City.

Five other fans were also banned for one to two years for “abusive and threatening and offensive behaviour”.

However, Sterling says the experience “wasn’t on my mind at all” when deciding on his new club.

“I can’t let an incident from individuals change my perception of the club,” Sterling told reporters ahead of Chelsea’s match against Tottenham on Sunday, according to Reuters.

“I don’t have any hate or malice for the individual,” Sterling said when asked if he would be willing to meet a man with a life ban. “It’s something I can do here, now, or tomorrow. It’s not a problem.”

Sterling completed his move from Manchester City to Chelsea this summer by winning four league titles at the Etihad.

‘True Purpose’

While excelling on the pitch, the 27-year-old has sought to use his platform to help tackle racism and said his ability to help others in society has been his “best friend away from football”. The real goal is”.

Following the racist incident in 2018, Sterling uploaded a post on social media highlighting the difference in the way the media spoke about young black athletes and white athletes.

He argued that the media played a role in perpetuating racial prejudices in society, and has since become an unofficial spokesperson for athletes of his generation on the issue of equality.

“Of course, football is my main goal and my real talent, but the second thing that gives me the most joy is helping people,” he added.

“I’ve moved away from the racial side of it and focused more on helping and nurturing young black people.”

Sterling says a lack of playing time at Manchester City prompted him to move to the London club and says he is excited by the opportunity.

Chelsea won their opening game of the season 1-0 against Everton but now face a tough test against Tottenham at the weekend.
