The Japanese Defense Ministry believes it could be a ballistic missile, the country’s coast guard told CNN. The Defense Ministry also tweeted that “a possible ballistic missile was fired from North Korea” on Saturday.
The Japanese Coast Guard said the object fell into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, at 2:25 p.m. local time.
North Korea has stepped up its missile test program this year. Saturday’s projectile marks the country’s 14th missile launch so far in 2022, including one that failed in mid-March.
In comparison, it conducted only four tests in 2020, and eight in 2021.
