Taylor, 35, told CNN Sport’s Don Riddle, “I think this is one of the battles that makes history. Men and women, this game has never seen such a fight before.”
“I think after Saturday night, people will talk about me and Amanda Serrano for years and years to come.”
The ‘world’s most famous arena’ will be the perfect place to fight among the best people in the world. Both ESPN and DAZN put Taylor first and Serrano second for a pound.
This will be the first boxing fight between Pound No. 1 and No. 2 since 2008, when Manny Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez. The fight will be broadcast exclusively via DAZN at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Taylor (20-0, 6 knockouts), a 2012 Olympic gold medalist, has won lightweight titles at WBA, IBF, WBO, WBC and The Ring. Serrano, 33, (42-1-1, 30 knockouts) has won world titles in seven weight classes from 115 to 140 pounds. Last year, he successfully defended his WBO and WBC featherweight titles.
“We have two great champions in our prime and they are going to fight such an amazing battle,” Taylor said. “I think stylistically we can do very well together. He’s obviously a very, very aggressive fighter and so am I. So, I think it’s going to be a very interesting fight.” I can’t wait for that. “
Know your worth
There was a time when Taylor thought this fight would never happen.
It was originally scheduled for May 2, 2020, but was postponed due to the epidemic. When it came time to reschedule both Taylor and Serrano, he decided to fight for a bigger salary, further delaying the match.
“When you are able to sell the stadiums and the stadiums, you know that you know your worth. Very, very special,” said Taylor.
Speaking to MMA Hour in January, Jack Paul confirmed that the two boxers would earn seven figures for the match. In 2021, Brooklyn-based Puerto Rican Serrano signed with Paul’s company, Most Valuable Promotions, which is promoting a battle with matchroom sport.
Taylor, a longtime leader in the sport, does not have enough money to pay her bills – she wants her success to spread to the rest of women’s boxing.
“I think we’ve covered a lot of ground over the last few years in terms of paychecks and wallets, but I still feel like we still have a long way to go.” He told CNN.
“It’s not that Amanda and I are the only ones getting big paychecks, but she has to take on other female fighters and I hope that can happen.”
The recent rise in the popularity of women’s boxing is credited to Taylor and Serrano. Since moving to Pro in 2016, Taylor has seen huge changes in his game.
“When I first became a pro six years ago, it was very unusual to see women’s fights on the cards, but now you see women’s fights in every boxing card and you see female fighters as household names. At the same time, that’s incredible, “said Taylor.
“I think for the first time, people are really looking at the best in women’s boxing. They’re looking at the best of the best and only the skills that are actually involved.”
Growing up, Taylor looked to Christy Martin and Daddy Gugarty for representation in the ring. Now, at the forefront of her sport, Taylor acknowledges that she is a source of inspiration for young women boxers.
“It’s definitely a big responsibility, it’s an honor for me. You want to have that influence and the influence is a privilege. I’m very, very fortunate to be in this position and I feel lucky. ” Taylor said he grew up in Bury, near Dublin in the Republic of Ireland.
“When I started boxing at the age of 10 or 11, there were no female fighters in the country, and when I go to every boxing gym in Ireland at the moment, every gym is full of female fighters; and The talent that I’m looking for is absolutely superstar in the making. It’s been the most satisfying part of this journey for me. “
