Chaos as American family brings unexploded shell to Israel airport

(CNN) – An American family wreaked havoc on Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv on Thursday as they tried to move an unexploded shell through airport security.

Israeli airport officials explained in a press statement that the shells were found by tourists while traveling in the Golan Heights.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in a 1967 war and annexed the narrow strip of land in 1981. The area is considered an occupied territory under international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

Upon arrival at the airport, the American passengers announced the shell to protect the airport upon unloading, and the airport staff announced the evacuation. The video, which has been circulating on social media, shows people running in fear, falling behind pillars and falling to the ground.

One person was reported injured in the incident, an Israeli passenger who ran into the luggage conveyor belt amid chaos.

Israeli airport officials confirmed that the evacuation of the terminal had been canceled “after a security incident was ruled out.”

The American passengers were questioned by airport officials but were later allowed to board their flight.

Israeli airport officials said the incident was “currently under operational investigation.” The injured man was taken to hospital.

Amir Tal informed Jerusalem. Francesca Street reports from London.
