Biden meets with Prince of Wales in Boston

President Joe Biden met with the Prince of Wales in Boston on Friday, where the two men shared “warm memories” of the late Queen Elizabeth II, according to Kensington Palace.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are in Boston. 2nd Annual Earthshot Prize Awards The event, an ambitious initiative founded by Prince William to help tackle some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges, is scheduled for Friday. The heir to the British throne was inspired to launch the project by President John F. Kennedy’s “Moonshot” speech in 1962 when he tasked the United States with advancing space exploration.

After Biden greeted the prince outside the JFK Presidential Library and Museum, the couple spent half an hour together and had a “warm, friendly and substantive conversation,” according to a statement from Kensington Palace. The prince also expressed his global, long-term ambition for the prize, the palace said.

White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre said earlier Friday that climate goals and mental health priorities are expected to be discussed.

Biden was last at a Boston library in September, where he delivered remarks on his administration’s cancer moonshot program.

The Bidens have met the British royal family on several occasions, including recently. Attending the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London last September. During their meeting in Boston, Prince William thanked Biden for traveling to attend the Queen’s services.

The royal family’s three-day visit to Boston is their first visit to the United States since 2014, when they visited New York. The couple had previously taken a whirlwind trip to California in 2011, a few months after their wedding.

The couple’s trip was seen by some as an opportunity to reset perceptions in America after a damaging few years. But as the pair flew into town, controversy erupted back home, when an aide quit earlier this week following “unacceptable and deeply deplorable” remarks made by a black executive visiting Buckingham Palace.

In Boston, Biden later participated in a phone bank with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The president told reporters on Friday that while in Boston, he will help Georgia Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock with a fundraising campaign for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS Shows Warnock has a narrow lead over Republican challenger Herschel Walker among those likely to vote in Tuesday’s runoff election.

CNN previously reported that Biden was heading to Massachusetts to headline a fundraiser for the Georgia Senate runoff race on Friday. The president is scheduled to attend the event along with Democratic Massachusetts Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey.
