Police say 20-year-old David Japes McCorey Whitley was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with the child’s death.
Watley is accused of leaving his daughter in the car for several hours on Tuesday afternoon. According to Snellville police, Watley arrived at the police department after 2 p.m. to retrieve his firearm from a property guard when officers learned he had outstanding probation charges. He was taken into custody and transferred to Guinness County Jail. He denied the allegations in a statement issued Tuesday evening.
Investigators say Watley never informed them that a child was inside the car.
Investigators said the entire conversation with Watley was recorded on a body camera.
During the news conference, police said that at some point after the arrest, the accused contacted the child’s grandmother who then went to the vehicle and found the child inside the suspect’s vehicle.
The grandmother took the child to the local emergency room where he was pronounced dead.
Watley will be transferred back to Guinness County Jail on Wednesday afternoon on charges of second-degree murder, officials said.
CNN was unable to determine at this time whether Watley had a lawyer.
