(CNN) – An inexperienced passenger landed a private jet safely at a Florida airport on Tuesday afternoon, May 10, when the pilot became ineligible.
According to LiveATC.net Audio CNN, as soon as the situation arose, the passenger could be heard from the air traffic control saying that he did not know how to fly the plane.
An unidentified passenger said in the audio, “My condition here is serious. “My pilot is confused, and I don’t know how to fly.”
An air traffic controller then began giving instructions to the passenger about the plane’s landing, according to the audio, which eventually landed at Florida’s Palm Beach International Airport.
“Try to grasp the surface of the wings and see if you can start descending for me. Go over the controls and descend very slowly,” the air traffic controller could be heard saying to the man.
“Try to follow the coast to the north or south. We are trying to find you.”
In additional audio obtained through LiveATC.net, another air traffic controller could be heard telling other planes what had happened.
“You just saw some passengers landing on this plane,” the tower operator could be heard telling an American airline pilot that he was waiting for takeoff for Charlotte, North Carolina.
“Did you say the passengers landed the plane?” Asked the American Airlines pilot. “Oh, my God. Great job,” she said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the single-engine Cessna 208 had two occupants when the pilot had a “potential medical problem.” The pilot’s condition was not immediately known.
The FAA is investigating.
